THE SMOKEPHOTOGRAPHIST — Nawfal Johnson (attempting) To Make Abstract Expressionism Art Photography Great Again!

A Quote by Andreas Feininger, one of the TWO most influential Photographers in my Photographic Life — The other is Carl Fischer (a Famous ESQUIRE MAGAZINE PHOTOGRAPHER), who I have had the honor to communicate with, some time ago.

Technique & Art are the two main design elements I strive to incorporate into my art photography pieces.

About Atropos:

“Atropos or Aisa (/ˈætrəpɒs/; Ancient Greek: Ἄτροπος “without turn”), in Greek mythology, was one of the three Moirai, goddesses of fate and destiny. Her Roman equivalent was Morta.

Atropos was the oldest of the Three Fates, and was known as the “inflexible” or “inevitable.” It was Atropos who chose the mechanism of death and ended the life of mortals by cutting their thread with her “abhorred shears.” She worked along with her two sisters, Clotho, who spun the thread, and Lachesis, who measured the length. Atropos has been featured in several stories such as Atalanta and Achilles.”

This is a three piece series. It is of a “Non-Geometric, Delineated, Abstract, Figurative, style. The three art photographs of this series are my representation of the Greek mythological Fates: Lachesis, Clotho, and Atropos. There was no particular spark of influence to do this series. I am a student of Ancient Greek History, and Mythology, and I wanted to do a series of the Fates in my personal style: Non-geometric, Delineated Abstract.

These artworks are mixed medium—a combination of Alcohol, Oil, and Water based ink dyes. The original material is 135 gsm art paper, and the final material is digital photography.

About Clotho:

Clotho (/ˈkloʊθoʊ/; Greek: Κλωθώ) is one of the Three Fates or Moirai who spin (Clotho), draw out (Lachesis) and cut (Atropos) the thread of Life in ancient Greek mythology. Her Roman equivalent is Nona. Clotho was responsible for spinning the thread of human life. She also made major decisions, such as when a person was born, thus in effect controlling people’s lives. This power enabled her not only to choose who was born, but also to decide when gods or mortals were to be saved or put to death. For example, Clotho brought Pelops back to life when his father boiled and killed him.” (Source: Wikipedia.org/wiki/clotho)

—————

Lachesis (/ˈlækɪsɪs/; Greek: Λάχεσις, Lakhesis, “disposer of lots”, from λαγχάνω, lanchano, “to obtain by lot, by fate, or by the will of the gods”), in ancient Greek religion, was the second of the Three Fates, or Moirai: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. Normally seen clothed in white, Lachesis is the measurer of the thread spun on Clotho’s spindle, and in some texts, determines Destiny, or thread of life. Her Roman equivalent was Decima. Lachesis was the apportioner, deciding how much time for life was to be allowed for each person or being. She measured the thread of life with her rod. She is also said to choose a person’s destiny after a thread was measured. In mythology, it is said that she appears with her sisters within three days of a baby’s birth to decide its fate. The Series Style: Non-Geometric, Delineated, Abstract, Figurative.

Even though Lachesis is second of the three Fates, she is the first of the Fates I completed in this series. She is typically shown in white, but my works are all colourful; therefore, my use of colour doesn’t escape Lachesis.
